Hi everyone! My name is Sydney and I am from Colorado Springs, Colorado. I have really enjoyed the program so far and have made so many lifelong friends. This has been an amazing experience, and I am so excited for the next three weeks.
Today was a super busy day. We started the morning by getting a little bit of extra sleep before waiting for the bus for our first field trip. We then spent the morning at the Children’s National Research Institute. Apparently, the institute building was an old army hospital which was then converted into a bunker that could withstand a hydrogen bomb during the Cold War. We got to tour Dr. Ljubica Caldovic’s lab and heard about her amazing work with rare genetic diseases. It was so cool to see a real lab and to hear about all of the discoveries she has made to advance her field.
After returning from the lab, we got to relax and bake some cookies before walking down to a bowling alley. We then spent an hour bowling. This was such a fun experience as I haven’t gone bowling for a few years now.
Overall, today was such a fun day and I am so excited to continue our work in the lab tomorrow.
