6:45 AM: Good morning, SSP! I struggled to roll out of bed today, but I’m up and awake. I keep thinking about this dream I had yesterday. I was trapped in a protein farm—I was in a barn containing several corrals, filled with terrified humans. The ranchers injected me with L-arabinose to get me to express the protein they wanted to harvest. I woke up right as they were going to put me in the human-sized centrifuge.
Okay, it’s time for breakfast!
7:20 AM: Breakfast! I got my usual breakfast: a bowl of cheerios and milk along with fruit. No strawberries/raspberries/blueberries today…so I settled for an apple. Not too bad.
I’m going to head to lecture now, then lab. I’ll be back.
11:00 AM: Lab is going well so far. We de-stained our gels—the bands looked really cool; we could see the band of our specific protein. Our group made 2 of the solutions: Nickel Buffer A and Nickel Buffer B. When pouring the glycerol, we were able to watch the instrument that creates a vortex with the stirring rod. Iftekhar insists that he wants to be in the vortex one day.
I’m talking with Ulee about His-tagging right now. I love myself some divalent metal ions. We’re going to work on the second part of the lab soon—waiting for Dr. Reeves to come over.
I briefly (and jokingly) interviewed Dr. Reeves. I asked her (with my hand acting as the microphone, of course) how she felt about watching us do our lab.
She reports, “It was a little stressful but really rewarding to see all of you working!”
I think I’m going to do a real interview with her and Dr. Fantin when we go to the scavenger hunt-dog walk extravaganza. Alright, I’ll be back later 😊
12:00 PM: I went to lunch at Au Bon Pain. I was going to go to the Union to get Poke bowls, but the lines were absurdly long. So, we went back to the other dining place—I ate a grilled cheese and tried the mango smoothie. 3/5 for the grilled cheese but 5/5 for the smoothie! I ate with Caroline, Eve, Marcy, Miranda, and Siya. Also talked a bit with Martin, Iftekhar, Ulee, and Peyton.
1:00 PM: I’m at the armory right now for the class activity. I’ll grind the work out and then I’ll go to lab and the dog walk! Bye for now.
2:41 PM: Done with the armory for today, back in the lab. Conducting interviews while I lie in wait.
“Iftekhar, how are you doing on this fine day?”
“I’m doing okay, stressed out the work but having fun.”
2:58 PM: I just interviewed Jada. She said she went to Au Bon Pain for lunch and had the spicy chicken melt(?). I don’t quite remember, but she said she got extra sauce because she’s a “sauce girl.” She’s so real for that.
5:00 PM: I’m sitting on the ping pong table in the basement right now. I’m with a few other people (Torin, one of the Ryans, Andrew, Leyu, Kaden, Peyton, and Iftekhar). An hour ago, I went on that walk with the others. The dogs were so cute! It was really hot outside, so Iftekhar and I ran into the fountain and got quite soggy! Pictures will be attached.
I forgot to interview Dr. Reeves and Dr. Fantin, but that’s okay.
Alright, I’m going to get ready for dinner. Might go to the concert later- we’ll see how tired I am. This was a really good day!
