Day 4- The SSP Journey Continues (PUR II Biochemistry)

The days at SSP seem to pass quickly, especially as we become more closely bonded with each other! Today was particularly engaging and productive.

Our morning started with harvesting cells from our large cultures. We stored the cells in the freezer, preparing them for lysis and protein purification. Analyzing bacterial growth using optical density and a spectrophotometric assay was quite interesting! In fact, my favorite part was observing the cells separate into a supernatant in such large quantities, and collaborating with everyone added to the experience.

Following the lab session, we attended a class activity where we used MOE to view protein structures, visually seeing every single detailed architecture of proteins and understanding their functions on a molecular level!! After lunch, we returned to the lab to prepare solutions necessary for protein purification.

The day concluded with a lecture on protein purification techniques. Although it was a more intensive day than usual, it was equally rewarding. We finished a challenging assignment on primers during a study session that lasted until 10 PM, which felt like a significant accomplishment!

Oh, and a special shoutout to Mingjia – happy birthday! Celebrating with friends during our busy schedule added an extra layer of joy to the day.

SSP is turning out to be an amazing experience. I feel so lucky to be here, learning and growing with such wonderful people. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
