It’s our first weekend at SSP, and it’s been super fun! We began our daily walk to ABE (our lecture/lab building), and started the morning off with lectures at 8:30 AM on sequence comparisons, before moving into a lab working on our chemostats and autoclaves. We had donuts in the morning session from faculty as we had suffered a lot troubleshooting chemostat. Luckily, my group’s chemostat improved, but it seems we’re all a bit traumatized by the words “chemostat” or “autoclave..” At 11:30 AM, we wrapped up our labs and left for lunch and free time until dinner.
Esthelle, Tiffany, Anne, Katie, and I walked to Ford, our dining hall, and lunch was unexpectedly great! Another fun conversation over onion rings, soups, and sandwiches, followed by a walk back to our dorms, where we did some much-needed laundry and lounging around. The week has been busy — we’ve been leaving the dorms at 7 and coming back around 10, so in our five hours of free time, many of the girls napped or caught up on chores.
Then, we left for an early dinner — and then bowling! It was a super fun competition between lab groups, faculty, and our TAs. (The TAs won, with Team 1 in second, and faculty in third!) Following bowling, we headed back, but we saw a fountain on the way — so naturally we detoured with a fountain run!! Descriptions can’t show how fun the day was, so here are some pictures: (Celerina)
