Eshing’s July 1st Blog

Today was a pretty unconvential day. This morning, me and my roommate dragged ourselves out of bed at 8 after going to sleep at 2AM last night. I ran into the lecture hall at 9AM sharp with my last frappuccino and Clif bar in hand, determined to pay attention to the lecture. However, after two irrelevant sounding youtube videos, I felt as if I was about to collapse. Then, we heard music coming from the door as the TAs marched in. The lecture was fake; we were doing field day.

We were put in groups of 4, and tried different kinds of egg related tasks, including an egg hunt and racing while carrying an egg in a spoon. We also had a trivia game. While none of us knew that Denmark had the oldest flag and I dropped the egg 3 times before I broke it, I would give us an A+ for effort. It was really fun; thanks to the fantastic TAs and Dr. F for organizing it!

After this, we went to the college round table where we saw presentations from representatives of SSP’s affiliate schools, Caltech and Harvey Mudd. I felt very lucky that we had the opportunity to gain some valuable information about these schools.

Finally, we had an amazing speaker, Dr. Nicholas Suntzeff, who gave a talk on cosmology, covering topics ranging from the beginning of the universe as we know it to the search for extraterrestrial life. Afterward, we had tons of questions for him.

We were also on the 1:20-3AM shift for observing our asteroid. Luckily, it wasn’t too cloudy and our group was able to take clear pictures of our asteroid. We were even able to look at Hoag’s Object, which has a perfectly circular ring. We also saw a rabbit and took some cool pictures of the bell tower.
