Today was a day to remember. After many lectures and many other class activities, we
finally got the chance to apply our scientific and experimental knowledge in the lab. We
first started with finding the lab. It was certainly an experience and something that woke
us all up. The building, although very beautiful, is built like a maze and navigating it was
probably the most difficult and horrendous task we had to do all day. I have to say that
after completing today’s lab, it has certainly opened my eyes to the beauty of
biochemistry. It felt very satisfying when we came to check on our bacteria’s growth as
we saw a high value on the spectrophotometer indicating that our mathematical
calculations went right. Another thing that I appreciated about the science regarding
this lab was how everything added up and made sense towards the end. Being part of
SSP has taught me so many essential lab and communication skills that I hope to
master by the end of the program. And besides all the complicated and brain-fatiguing
science and the very smelly bacteria that could clog up one’s nostrils for a week, our
overall interactive experience was a fun and interesting one. After finishing the lab, we
went to the IU memorial and got lunch together as a team. We discussed our personal
growth from the last lab we had worked on and we came to the conclusion that we were
improving bit by bit as each of us attained a lot of experience as we spent more time in
the lab. Seeing my team work and improve together was a large and rewarding
experience that pushes us to do our best everyday and to keep trying and to never give
up. Overall, it has been a week and my experience so far has been unforgettable.
