On Stealing Flour and Heart-Shaped Decorations

Author: Michael H.

When I signed up for SSP, I did not realize that during the first week, I would be carrying a 10lb bag of flour from my kitchen while my very confused mother watched, only to go back a few minutes later to dig up a jar of Brewer’s Yeast and lug it back to my room. Needless to say, SSP is shattering my expectations in more ways than one.

I was very pleasantly surprised to hear that we would be participating in a scavenger hunt during our first Saturday social block. After a week of SSP lectures and work/play blocks, I was looking forward to engaging with the SSP community in a way that didn’t involve any pesky psets. After all, though bonding over mutual frustration and tears of hopelessness and despair is a great way to get to know other people, there’s nothing quite as effective as the classic game/activity.

iPod? Cassette Tape? TELEPHONE BOOK???? These things still exist?

Anyways, just to document what actually happened during this scavenger hunt, well, let’s just say I’ve never quite rushed through my house with such urgency before in search of a ball. A rubber ball that I found stashed in a box next to my TV, just so I could get one measly point. I then scavenged for rubber bands, goggles, plastic forks, a bag of flour, a jar of yeast, a purple crayon, a magnet, a not-baseball hat, and many other miscellaneous items. I also walked straight into my sister’s room while she was in a Zoom meeting, plucked a heart decoration right off her wall, and walked out without saying a word. Yup, I felt cool.

Though our team eventually got 4th place (so close!), I really did enjoy this change of pace compared to the fast and brutal learning during the week. Still, this was just the first Saturday social block for the program, and we’ve got many more to enjoy. Hey, I might even get a cool t-shirt or something another week. Who knows?

Hi everyone! I’m Michael and I’m from Santa Rosa, California. I enjoy swimming, coding, and I’m currently learning to drive in my spare time. I’m a huge fan of comic book movies like the MCU and the Dark Knight Trilogy, as well as TV shows such as The Flash and Invincible. I love eating In-N-Out (shoutout to all CA peeps!) and listening to Imagine Dragons.
