When we began planning SSP ’20, we never imagined it would be online.

On June 21, 144 excited teenagers did not lug heavy suitcases into college dorms. Instead they met their peers and faculty on Zoom. For some, that was a significant hurdle.

"My father is deceased. My mother is a seamstress and her income has drastically decreased because of the lockdown. Due to inflation and the economic crisis, a laptop costs 1½ months of our family’s income.”

SSP guarantees to meet all demonstrated financial need, a promise backstopped by our generous supporters. This summer, that included providing technology, even buying them a laptop if necessary, one they can continue to use for senior year and college.

Without the cost of room & board, we could cut the program fee by $3,000. However, we incurred some extra costs while ensuring that our 144 participants and 32 faculty have everything they need to be successful.

%%EDITORCONTENT%%nbsp;   4,352  laptops and other technology for financial aid recipients
 %%EDITORCONTENT%%nbsp;   2,841  technology for faculty
%%EDITORCONTENT%%nbsp;   2,000  est. telescope time for remote observing
%%EDITORCONTENT%%nbsp;   4,320  Biochemistry wet lab simulation software
%%EDITORCONTENT%%nbsp;   1,550  conferencing and other technology subscriptions
%%EDITORCONTENT%%nbsp; 15,652  support for faculty online planning and operations
 %%EDITORCONTENT%%nbsp; 30,715  total additional need

SSP’s design is well-proven, so our planning emphasized continuity. Teens still did research in teams of three, as close to hands-on as possible: pointing telescopes remotely in the Astrophysics program, modeling enzymes in silico in the Biochemistry program.

Alumni, faculty, parents, and friends, everyone who donates or volunteers, make SSP possible … this year and every year. Thank you!!

The CARES Act included a universal charitable deduction, allowing you to deduct up to $300 on your 2020 tax return, regardless of whether you itemize. Your gift to SSP will qualify.
