UNC Astro Blog Post Day 28

Hi everyone! 🙂 I can’t believe that the program is nearing its end. Time passed by so fast, but thinking back (and scrolling through past Canvas assignments), we also accomplished so much. At the same time, the daily schedule and activities already feel so “normal” and “natural,” and I feel like I’ve been here for a long time. The perception of passing time does feel a little weird here.

Today is a Sunday, so we didn’t have any lectures, and I slept through a good portion of the day. I woke up in the morning and called my family and friends. Then, I decided to have some of the Chipotle I bought yesterday as lunch, but I underestimated the freeze of the fridge and had to put the bowl back into the microwave three times before my cheese stopped feeling like a brick.

After that, I took a nap until 1, where I woke up for 10 minutes to complete my assigned chore (swiffering the kitchen). Wanting to participate in the afternoon activities, I set my alarm for 2:50PM and went back to sleep; but it turned out that I either forgot to turn it on or completely slept through it. Instead, I woke up at 4:30PM. Hurrying downstairs, I managed to attend the last 30 minutes of the crocheting session.

As shown above, I definitely wasn’t the most talented crocheter. I had a decent bit of trouble figuring out all the twists and loops of the yarn and our TA, Lucy, ended up helping me quite often. In the end, my crochet still turned out more like a cinnamon twist than a strip. Nevertheless, I was really glad I was able to learn this new skill (even though I don’t feel as good about my ability to retain it), as it had been on my infinitely long to-learn/to-try list for a long time. It was totally worth it and I had SO MUCH fun trying it out! 😀

After dinner and a brief computer lab work session, we had movie night and voted to watch “Behind the Curve,” a documentary above Flat Earthers and the Flat Earth Movement. Obviously, as a documentary, it wasn’t as thrilling or exciting as, perhaps, “Interstellar” or “Gravity,” but I actually really liked it. Though there were definitely sarcastic and really humorous moments, it was more complex than I had expected upon first hearing the phrase “Flat Earthers.” Along the same lines, it was less focused on the actual scientific reasoning and evidence and more of a psychological and sociological exploration of the movement, which I appreciated learning about.

And…that’s it! Honestly, I feel quite lucky that today was pretty eventful and I was able to write about so many activities (I had originally just chosen today, July 7th, because I like the number 7). Anyway, hope you have a great day. Bye!
