Welcome to SSP Day 1, Everyone!

We are absolutely delighted to welcome you in person to the Summer Science Program (SSP)! After a week of meticulous planning and preparation, we are more than ready to dive into an amazing summer filled with learning, discovery, and camaraderie.

About SSP

SSP is a unique journey designed for talented and motivated high school students. It offers a rare chance to experiment hands-on scientific research. This is an intensive six-week exploration. Participants will push their limits, collaborate with driven peers, and experience real-world science.

Meet the Faculty

Now, let’s introduce you to our amazing faculty. Their enthusiasm, knowledge, and dedication will guide you through the challenges and joys of the program.

Academic Director: Dr. Lee Macomber

Hello everyone,

I’m Dr. Lee Macomber, an Associate Professor of Biology at Central College in central Iowa. I teach a range of courses across all undergraduate levels, with a particular focus on Intro to Cellular Biology, as well as upper-level Microbiology and Molecular Biology. My passion for science and microbiology drives my teaching and research.

Specifically, for “The Summer Science Program”, I’m excited about experimenting with directed evolution studies. The potential to uncover new insights and innovations in this field is incredibly thrilling.

When I’m not in the lab or classroom, I love diving into the world of video games. Strategy games and RPGs are my favorites—they’re a great way to unwind and challenge myself in different ways. I’m also an avid fan of anime which offer fantastic storytelling and character development that I find both relaxing and inspiring.

I’m a die-hard Philadelphia sports fan, always cheering on my teams with unwavering support. Additionally, I’m an enthusiastic reader of sci-fi and fantasy books.

Here’s to a fantastic academic journey together!

Best regards,

Dr. Lee Macomber

Associate Academic Director: Dr. Melissa Lamanna

Hello everyone,

I’m Dr. Melissa Lamanna, an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Wagner College, Staten Island, New York. As the leader of my research lab at Wagner College, I focus on disease and education. I study how socioeconomic factors and pathogen proteins influence outbreaks. This summer, I’m excited about our experiments aimed at discovering new mutations and fostering scholastic growth in our young scientists.

Outside of teaching and research, I love puzzles, which keep my problem-solving skills sharp, and practicing yoga for balance and focus. I’m also passionate about enhancing sustainable environmental practices, believing that small changes can make a significant impact.

I’m looking forward to sharing this journey of scientific discovery with all of you. Whether it’s discussing bacteria, working on innovative research projects, or sharing tips on sustainable living, I’m here to support and inspire you.

Best regards,

Dr. Melissa Lamanna

Associate Academic Director: Dr. Benjamin Carter

Hello everyone,

I’m Ben Carter, born in Indianapolis, IN, and raised in Greenwood, IN, and St. Augustine, FL. I completed my undergraduate studies at IUPUI and earned my Ph.D. from Purdue University. As of January 2024, I’m a College Professor at Purdue University.

My research focuses on epigenetic, genome-wide data analysis, and chronic kidney disease. I’m passionate about advancing our understanding in these fields.

Outside of academia, I enjoy basketball, lifting, video games, science, and food. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Japan and Europe multiple times, which has broadened my perspectives and enriched my experiences.

Fun fact: I’m over two meters tall and once had to dress as a knight for my sister’s wedding.

I’m excited to engage with students and colleagues at “The Summer Science Program” and contribute to the vibrant academic community here.

Best regards,

Ben Carter
